Try a bowl of faux mini pumpkins on the coffee table this fall. The problem starts when the bowl, books and candle occupy the spot where you put your mug. Before arranging anything, set down the things the table needs to hold on an ordinary evening: drinks on coasters, the remote and perhaps a laptop. Decor gets the space left over.
The three arrangements below use the same small collection. No shopping list is required if you already have suitable pieces.
Gather a small collection
Start with a shallow tray, one or two books, and a low bowl. Add a few faux mini pumpkins if you own them. An LED pillar is optional; the bowl alone can supply the seasonal detail.
Choose books you want to keep nearby. Leave valuable or delicate volumes on a shelf away from drinks. For the bowl, a plain cereal bowl is enough to try the arrangement before buying something decorative. Keep its base entirely supported wherever you put it.
Use battery-operated candles in these grouped arrangements. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends considering flameless candles and keeping burning candles at least 12 inches from anything that burns. A little tray of paper books and dried decorations is a poor place to arrange around a flame.
Look one: a compact group for a square table
Put the tray toward the center, with the books lying flat on one side and the bowl beside them. Keep the bowl directly on the tray if stacking it on books feels unstable. An LED pillar can fill the remaining corner, but leave it out if you have to squeeze it in.
Try this on a square table where you want a single group visible from several seats. Walk around it and sit down on each side. The arrangement should leave a reachable place for a drink from every seat that uses the table.
If the tray takes up the entire useful surface, remove it and keep only the bowl. The outline of a tray is a styling preference, not a reason to crowd the room.
Look two: two low groups for a long table
Place the tray and bowl toward one end. Put a short book stack farther along the table, with empty tabletop between the two groups. This spreads the decoration along a rectangle without filling its length with individual pumpkins.
Keep loose pumpkins inside the bowl. Lift away the bowl when you need the table for a board game. Set coasters beside the seating positions rather than on the books; give drinks an obvious landing place before guests arrive.

Look three: a single bowl for a small or round table
Put the books back on the shelf. Set the bowl slightly off center and arrange the coasters where you reach for them. Try three pumpkins, then remove one if the bowl looks packed.
This is the version to try when a tray catches your sleeve or you keep moving decorations to use the table. A small dish with a seasonal color can replace the pumpkins entirely. It can also stay after fall without needing storage.
A round tray is an option on a larger round table. Test it with the mugs in place before choosing its diameter.
Check the arrangement before calling it finished
Sit where you normally sit. Reach for your drink, change the channel and put down a book. Then clear the decor to use the full table. If that takes more separate trips than you want, consolidate it on a manageable tray or remove pieces.
Skip tall stems that cross your view of the television or the person opposite. In homes with young children or pets, choose decorations appropriate for their reach; small loose objects and accessible batteries need particular care. Coffee table questions
What if the books keep getting wet? Move them off the table.
How do I carry a loaded tray? Remove anything unstable first and use both hands. If the tray flexes or is heavy, clear the objects separately. A decorative tray is not automatically suitable for carrying a stack of books.
